Import MIDI Files
Bring existing MIDI compositions into Potatoslicer. Notes are quantized to the row grid, programs mapped to chip waveforms, and percussion auto-detected.
Automatic Mapping
General MIDI program numbers are mapped to appropriate synthesis waveforms. Piano becomes pulse, bass becomes saw, strings become triangle — each GM family gets a fitting chip equivalent.
- - Piano, chromatic percussion, and guitar map to pulse waves
- - Bass instruments map to saw waves for weight
- - Strings and organs map to triangle for smoothness
- - Sound effects and percussive hits map to noise
- - Tempo is extracted from the MIDI file or defaults to 120 BPM
Percussion Detection
MIDI channel 10 is automatically recognized as percussion. Drum tracks get noise waveforms with short attack and decay settings tuned for rhythmic playback.
- - Channel 10 automatically becomes a "drums" instrument
- - Noise waveform with fast envelope for punchy percussion
- - Non-drum channels become individual instruments by MIDI channel
- - One instrument per channel — clean separation from import
Quantization & File Search
MIDI events are quantized to the nearest row based on ticks-per-quarter and rows-per-beat. The importer searches common locations for MIDI files automatically.
- - Timing quantized via ticks-per-row calculation for clean grid alignment
- - Searches current directory, songs folder, and home directory
- - Confirmation dialog shows found files before import begins
- - Supports standard .mid and .midi file extensions
